The Best International Schools on the Costa del Sol for Expat Families

SEPTEMBER 2026

For families considering a move, the property is rarely the biggest question. The biggest question is almost always whether the children will settle, thrive, and find their place — and whether the right school even exists within a reasonable drive of the home they are considering.

On the Costa del Sol, the reassuring answer is that it does, and it has for a long time. Decades of British and Northern European settlement have built one of the deepest concentrations of international schooling anywhere in Spain, with genuine choice across curricula, price points and locations.

“For families, the decision to relocate is rarely about the villa. It’s about whether the children will belong.”

Why the Coast Has Such Strong Schooling

The British curriculum dominates the region, with numerous schools delivering a continuous pathway from Year 1 through IGCSEs and A-Levels at Year 13. Alongside it sit strong options in the International Baccalaureate, the American curriculum with Advanced Placement, and smaller French, German and Swedish-language schools serving their respective communities — a genuinely broad choice for families arriving from almost anywhere in the world.

Marbella: The Highest Concentration

Marbella alone has more than eight international schools within a twenty-minute drive, the highest density on the coast. Aloha College, Swans International School and The English International College (EIC) are the three most established, each with decades of track record and strong university placement across the UK and continental Europe. Laude San Pedro offers a distinctive dual British–Spanish curriculum, allowing students to pursue A-Levels, the Spanish Bachillerato, or both. Annual fees across Marbella’s schools typically range from around €6,000 at the youngest year groups to €18,000–€20,000 or more at senior level.

Beyond Marbella: Sotogrande, Estepona and Málaga City

Sotogrande International School offers a full International Baccalaureate pathway from age three to eighteen, with a boarding option and fees ranging roughly €9,300–€27,000 depending on year group and boarding status. Atlas American School in Estepona delivers an American K–12 curriculum with Advanced Placement courses and optional IB certificates, with fees of approximately €8,600–€16,000. Deutsche Schule Málaga, set in the hills above Marbella East, serves the German-speaking community, while Svenska Skolan Marbella and EFIM — a trilingual French, Spanish and English school for ages three to eleven on Marbella’s Golden Mile — cater to smaller, specific communities. Further along the coast, Málaga city’s schools, including The British College, St George’s and Novaschool, typically run 20–30% below Marbella pricing, from around €3,500 upwards, and have seen rising demand as Málaga’s tech sector draws in younger international families.

“Fees vary by thousands of euros. What matters more is fit — curriculum, commute and community.”

What Else to Budget For

Tuition is only one line in the budget. Most British schools also charge a one-time enrolment fee of €1,500–€4,500, an annual capital or building levy of €700–€1,800 at premium schools, lunch costs of €120–€180 a month, school transport of €120–€220 a month depending on distance, and €600–€1,400 in the first year for books, technology and uniform.

Practical Advice

Places at the most popular schools and year groups fill months in advance, so applying by January for September entry is strongly advised. Before committing to a home, it is worth doing a Monday morning drive-test at school-run time — the A-7 and the roads through Marbella and San Pedro can behave very differently at 8am than they do mid-morning, and the right school is only right if the daily commute is manageable too.
